Families are a precious gift from God that should not be taken for granted, so when issues do arise, we need to turn to God and ask for His healing hands to intervene. Here are 11 powerful prayers for broken families.

1. Prayer for Healing

Lord our Redeemer, we thank You that by Your stripes we are healed, and now we ask You to look over our family and heal our brokenness. Help each of us to take responsibility to right the wrongs we have caused and move forward in healing. Help us to humble ourselves and confess our sins to one another and to You so that we can receive healing. You alone are our help. Amen.

2. Prayer of Brokenness

Lord of Peace, we admit the brokenness of our family, and we yield personally to Your power to mend this family. We are bankrupt emotionally, and we are done with trying to fix things ourselves and are now casting ourselves dependently on You, open to the work You want to do in us individually, and as a family unit. We turn to You for the hope and help that only You can give. Amen.

3. Prayer for Redemption

Wonderful Counselor, we look to You in certain expectation, realizing that there is no situation that You cannot redeem. We embrace our need for mercy from You and from each other. We ask that You extend grace to us as we extend grace to one another. Holy Spirit, please guide us in building a family that is vibrant and full of Your life. Help us to edify each other and to avoid hurting or tearing each other down. Amen.

4. Prayer to Mend Dysfunction

Strong Deliverer, we ask You to deliver us from our dysfunction as a family. We confess that we have been feeding dysfunction through an atmosphere of distrust and repressed emotions. We confess that we have deceitful in communicating with each other and have even been deceiving our own selves. Help us establish healthy boundaries and honest communication with each family member. Amen.

5. Prayer for Peace

O Sustainer of my soul, I long for my home to be a sanctuary of peace, a home that flows in the sweetness of Your Holy Spirit. And yet, I confess, right now my family is anything but peaceful. Forgive me, and forgive my family members for being selfish, argumentative, domineering, sarcastic, and hurtful. May Your Holy Spirit cultivate within us love, joy, peace, and patience so that our family reflects You. Amen.

6. Prayer for Correct Approach

God my Advocate, I realize that it’s not appropriate for me to try to fix or to compensate for the dysfunction of my family members. I know that my well-meaning attempts only lead to enabling and encouraging wrong behavior. And so, Heavenly Father, I ask for You to do Your work of convicting and bringing my loved ones to repentance and restoration. Help me to place my trust in You and be a prayer warrior for my family. Amen.

7. Prayer to Break Generational Patterns

Upholder of my Life, as I examine my own childhood, I realize that I am mirroring the negative behaviors of my own parents that were disturbing and disruptive as I was growing up. My spouse and I have both been passing down these dysfunctional ways of communicating and behaving to our own children. Break these generational patterns, we plead, and help us to establish healthy communication and behaviors based on Your Word. Amen.

8. Prayer to Heal Wounds from Divorce

Jehovah Jireh my Provider, I pray that You will heal the deep emotional wounds that I and my children have sustained as a result of this divorce. Help us to forgive the injustices and not cling to anger or to bitterness. Be our strength in times of loneliness and depression and bring us back to a place of joy. Help us to release the past and to form a new life that is healthy and focused on You. Amen.

9. Prayer for Restoration

Lord my Strong Tower, I pray for You to rebuild my family that has been broken by the infidelity of my spouse. This crevice of brokenness seems insurmountable, and yet, I know that even now, in You, there is hope for healing and enduring reconciliation. Help us cling to that hope, and to rebuild trust. May my spouse repent and return to us, committed to restoration. Make all things new in this family, most gracious Savior. Amen.

10. Prayer to Overcome Negative Behaviors

Lord, You are the Strength of Your people; may Your strong arm intervene and eradicate these hurtful behaviors that have been tearing our family apart. We confess that we have been pursuing self-centered agendas and trying to manipulate each other. Forgive us Lord, and rebirth hope that sees beyond these tattered circumstances. Bring beauty from ashes as we anchor ourselves on the certainty of Your Word. Amen.

11. Prayer for New Life

Lord our Banner, I ask that You bless me and my children as we move into a new life following this painful breakup of our family. Give us the strength to stand together and be loving and affirming to one another. Provide a good place for us to live and provide for our financial needs. Mend our broken hearts and restore our souls. May we always place You as the Chief Cornerstone of this family. Amen.
